Top seed Holger Rune and the unseeded Alexander Shevchenko will battle each other next at the Brisbane International tournament. The two will square off in the second round with the winner taking on either James Duckworth or Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinals. Holger Rune had to battle from a set down to win his first-round tie. The Dane defeated Max Purcell in three sets to get his first piece of action of the new year. Digging deep to secure the win should build up the confidence levels of the world number eight. Rune is making his debut in Brisbane. The 20-year-old had a strong campaign last season and at one point rose to a career-high ranking of world number four. He compiled a 44-24 record and won one title while finishing as runner-up two more times.

Alexander Shevchenko also began his debut in Brisbane on a winning note. The Russian looked more assured in the first round as compared to Rune and won in straight sets against Luca Van Assche. He should therefore fancy his chances of causing an upset here. Shevchenko, ranked 48th in the ATP, which is a career-high, finished last season with a 45-34 record. He battled with a lack of consistency on outdoor hard courts and won 16 of 31 matches. Shevchenko alternated between the tour and challenger circuit. He won two challenger titles but the highlight of his season was at the Moselle Open where he earned his maiden tour final.
