Third seed Holger Rune will on Sunday play the unseeded Grigor Dimitrov in the second round at the China Open. The winner will play either Jannik Sinner or Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals. Holger Rune ended a run of five successive defeats by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the first round. He surrendered eight games in the match and will hope to be more composed against Dimitrov. Rune defeated Dimitrov the first time they met which was earlier this season at Wimbledon. The young Dane is currently down one place to fifth in the live ranking. He has compiled a 38-17 record in 2023 and has won 10 0f 18 matches on hard courts.

Grigor Dimitrov had a more rough first rounder than Rune and had to come from a set down to defeat Mackenzie McDonald. The match lasted for over two hours and saw a tiebreaker required to decide the second set. A one-time finalist in Beijing, Dimitrov will hope to have a sustained run in the competition as he did back in 2016. The current world number 19, has won 32 of the 49 matches he has played this season. He has an almost similar record on hard courts as Rune and has won 11 of 19 matches on the surface. As he has fared better recently than Rune, he will be confident of coming out on top here. Dimitrov has won three of his last four fixtures.
