Holger Rune has a good chance to seek his first win over Francisco Cerundolo when the two meet at the French Open. Sixth seed Rune has done well on clay and has a record of 15 wins from 18 matches. At the Rome Masters, Rune got to his third final of this season, right before arriving in Paris. All the three finals have been on clay and he has so far bagged one title. The Dane has carried that momentum and is one win away from equaling his best-ever result here. Rune reached the quarterfinals last season, on his Roland Garros debut. He has dropped one set thus far and comes to this round having defeated Genaro Alberto Olivieri 3-0. The win moved him up one place to fifth in the live ranking. This season, Rune has played only two matches at Roland Garros. He was granted a walkover in the second round and will be fresher for this second-ever meeting with Cerundolo.

Francisco Cerundolo defeated Rune in their only previous meeting four seasons ago in the second tier. Much has changed since then with Rune growing to become a top 10 player. Cerundolo will be confident of extending this advantage, banking on the success he has had so far on clay. Sixteen of the Argentine’s 23 wins so far have come on clay. This run has seen him play one final – in Lyon right before arriving in Paris. Cerundolo is in the fourth round for the first time; before this season, he hadn’t won a main draw match here. He defeated ninth seed Taylor Fritz in four sets in the last round. That win nudged him up three places to 20th in the live ranking which is a new career high for him. The winner of this tie will next take on either Casper Ruud or unseeded Nicolas Jarry in the quarterfinals.
