British player Heather Watson takes on sixth seeded Nuria Parrizas Dias in the Monterrey Open second round. The winner of this match will face either fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo or qualifier Harmony Tan in the quarter finals. Watson is bidding to reach her first quarter final since last June, when getting to the semi-final of a grass court tournament in Birmingham, England. The British number two has slipped down the rankings this year. Watson began 2022 in 72nd place but in the latest list, dropped from 82nd to 120th. This year has seen her reach the last 32 in Adelaide and the second round of the Australian Open. Since then, Watson has failed to qualify for the events held in Dubai and Doha. This week has gone a bit better for her with automatic entry into the main draw. Her first round match saw Watson beat qualifier Jule Niemer in three sets (middle set lost), winning the final set on a tie-break. That's taken her up to 112th in the live rankings. Only once in her last 11 tournaments has she won two matches in a row.

Nuria Parrizas Dias is the world number 51 but the Spaniard was a career-high 47th a couple of weeks ago. Dias began the year ranked 66th, a big improvement on the previous year when being as low as 229th. She rose up the rankings thanks to two WTA 125 tournament wins, following four victories on the ITF circuit. This year began well for Dias with a quarter final in Melbourne and getting to the third round of the Australian Open (her best ever performance in a Grand Slam). Since then, only one tournament has been played and that saw her lose in the first round in Guadaljara last week. This event has seen her beat Misaki Doi for the loss of just three games and a win here can take her to 45th in the live rankings. Back the Spaniard to get the win over her British opponent.
