Heather Watson, special exempt, and unseeded Jule Niemeier will meet in the 2023 Prague Open first round on Tuesday. The winner will set up a second-round showdown with eighth seed Kateryna Baindl. Heather Watson started the week ranked 134th in the WTA. She arrives for the tournament after her quarterfinal elimination in Warsaw. The Brit has had an unstable run in the season and so far has a 25-17 win-loss record. The majority of her victories, 13, however, have come on hard court and this should have her confident of a prolonged stay here. Watson has the head-to-head advantage against Niemeier. The two have met three times with Watson winning twice. The latest encounter was on grass in Nottingham in June where Watson won by straight sets.

Jule Niemeier is having a difficult campaign. She has lost more matches (20) than the 10 she has won. The German has also not managed a win on hard court. It is the only surface she hasn’t had a win on, losing all eight matches she has played. In recent times though, she has witnessed a change in fortunes. Six of her 10 victories have come in her last nine matches. She should therefore arrive for this match with renewed confidence. Niemeier made it to the quarterfinals in Hamburg in her last outing. That run saw her to move up the world rankings and is currently placed 96th in the live ranking.
