10th seeded Barbora Krejcikova takes on British wild card Heather Watson in the Wimbledon first round. Up next for the winner is a match against either unseeded Wang Xiyu or qualifier Mira Andreeva. Krejcikova begins this grass court tournament 11th in the world rankings. The year began with her in 22nd place but the Czech has been as low as 30th. The undoubted highlight of her year was winning the hard court event in Dubai where she beat the top three players in the world and two other top 15 players to win the title. At Wimbledon, the past two years have seen her get to the fourth and third rounds. In the warm-up for Wimbledon, Krejcikova reached the final of the grass court tournament held in Birmingham losing to Jelena Ostapenko.

Heather Watson got to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year. Just her luck that htere were no ranking points available in last year's tournament. Watson hasn't built on that performance and began this tournament ranked 144th. The Brit had to rely on a wild card to go straight into the main draw. Watson. Most of her success this year has come on the lower ITF circuit, including finals in Glasgow and Calvi, though no top 100 ranked players were beaten.
