Unseeded Gregoire Barrere will hope his excellent debut at Eastbourne continues when he battles second seed Tommy Paul on Friday. Barrere is making his debut in Eastbourne and is now only two wins away from winning the title here. If he does, it will be the first tour title of his career and the second in 2023. He began the year by winning the Quimper Challenger but since then hasn’t gotten close to challenging for a trophy. The Frenchman hasn’t had a stable season, so far managing a run of 25 wins and 18 losses. Four of his victories have come on grass where he has played six matches. In the last round, he defeated eighth seed Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. The first 2-0 win for him in the competition. This moved him up to 48th in the live ranking which is a new career high for him. Barrere has two wins against Paul in three encounters. Both matches however were played in 2016 and will have little to no effect here. Paul won their latest meeting.

Tommy Paul defeated Barrere in Lyon in May. This should have him confident of winning again, especially as he has had considerable success this year. Paul is in his fourth semifinal of the campaign and has been victorious twice. He is yet to win a title but will hope to change this here. To book this match with Barrere, Paul defeated compatriot J.J Wolf in three sets. This was his first dropped set of the tournament. Paul has won five of the seven matches he has played on grass and has a win-loss record of 25-14 thus far. He is up to 16th in the live ranking and can move a further two places if he wins on Friday. The winner here will advance to the final to face either fourth-seed Francisco Cerundolo or unseeded Mackenzie McDonald.
