Daniel Elahi Galan caused a shock in the first round in Umag. He beat seventh seeded Fabio Fognini and now takes on qualifier Giulio Zeppieri in round two. The winner of this match could face third seeded Holger Rune in the last eight. Galan began this week ranked a career high 99th and has risen 14 places after a run to the last 16 in Hamburg last week and is up another six places in the live rankings. A win here will take him into the top 90. He was as low as 128th in March but has won two clay court Challenger Tour events since then. He has had a tendency to lose to players ranked outside the top 100 but is showing a bit more consistency at present.

Giulio Zeppieri started this tournament ranked 168th, just down from his career high of 164th achieved earlier this month. The Italian had to qualify to get into this main draw and it was a real struggle to do so. He lost the first set in both of his qualifiers but eventually defeated Elias Ymer to get through. The first round saw him beat Pedro Cachin (again losing the first set) to get his maiden ATP Tour main draw win. He'd lost three matches in a row before this tournament (all to players outside the top 110) and is up to 158th in the live rankings. His run looks like ending here, back Galan to get the win.
