Fifth seed Adrian Mannarino hopes a return to grass will boost a disappointing year. He takes on qualifier Gijs Brouwer in the second round of the Libema Open in Hertogenbosch. Whoever wins this match will be up against either third seed Ugo Humbert or unseeded Arthur Fils in the quarter-finals. Mannarino is the world number 21 but was a career-high 17th in January of this year. The French player has lost seven matches, six of them on clay. His last win came on a hard court at Indian Wells at the start of March. He did show some form earlier in the year, reaching the last 16 of the Australian Open and the Dubai semi-final. On grass, Mannarino has made three fourth round appearances and lost in the second round in the past two years. He'll want to repeat what he did in this tournament in 2023. He was on a losing run when arriving here and then got to the last eight and had a win over Daniil Medvedev. He also reached the last eight at Queen's Club and was the losing finalist in Mallorca. 2023 also saw him win the grass court Hall of Fame Open in the USA.

Gijs Brouwer is the world number 232 and had to qualify to get into the main draw of the Libema Open. He had a struggle to do so and had to go to a final set against both Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Cristian Garin. It was a good achievement though both his opponents were seeded. The first round of the main draw produced another good performance with a three-set win over Jakub Mensik. For the third match in a row, he dropped the second set. Those three wins have taken him to 205th in the live rankings. Last week saw him qualify for and then lose in the first round of the Challenger Tour grass court event in Surbiton.
