The second semi-final in the Women's team semi-final table tennis competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics will see Germany face off against Japan on Thursday evening. Germany are the number five seed, while Japan are seeded second. Here’s out match prediction for this battle of the nations.
Germany’s only previous medal in this event was in Rio 2016 when they earned silver. They brought an end to India’s Olympic campaign in the quarter-final this year by securing a 3-2 win.
Yuan Wan and Xiaona Shan helped Germany to a 3-1 win over Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath in the doubles and Annett Kaufmann overcame Manika Batra to extend the lead.
Kamath got one back for India with a 3-1 win over Shan in the singles but Kaufmann, who also had an excellent round of 16, sealed the result, beating Akula 3-1 in the final singles match.
Meanwhile, Japan’s hopes of upgrading their silver in 2020 are still alive after they delivered a commanding 3-0 win over Thailand in the quarter-final of the competition on Wednesday afternoon.
Hina Hayata and Miu Hirano did the damage up front with a 3-0 win over Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang. Miwa Harimoto stretched out the lead further by beating Jinnipa Sawettabut, also without dropping a game.
Hirano wrapped up proceedings with another 3-0 win, this time over Paranang, displaying Japan’s dominance. Are we heading toward another China vs Japan final showdown?
