Germany begin their Men’s Basketball campaign at this year’s Olympic Games in Paris against Japan in Group B. Let’s look at the stats leading to our prediction for the match.

Germany are making a second successive Olympics appearance. As the reigning FIBA World Cup champions, they are huge favourites to at the very least qualify for the knockout rounds. Die Mannschaft have won 11 of their last 14 fixtures with one being a dominant 104-83 victory over Japan.

That was in a build-up match that extended their run in this fixture to two successive victories. Germany, who lost 92-88 to the USA in their last friendly, have a squad that largely comprises NBA and EuroLeague players. Japan are playing in successive Olympic tournaments for the first time in almost 50 years. Coached by Thomas Hovasse, they qualified for this year’s tournament via their performance at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Japan did not win a single game at their last two Olympic appearances and are on an eight-game losing run in this tournament. As hosts in the 2020 edition, they lost all their group fixtures. Chances of that being the case again are high, given their recent struggles.

Akatsuki Japan have lost eight of their last 12 fixtures and are on a three-match losing run. After their loss to Germany, Japan allowed more than 100 points yet again, this time to Serbia who defeated them 119-100.

The team largely comprises players playing in Japan. Two in the 12-man roster - Rui Hachimura and Keisei Tominaga - play in the NBA.
