Germany clinched their place in the knockout round of the competition by topping Group A during the preliminary stages with a record of four wins and a loss in their five matches.
During that time, they beat Sweden (30-27), Japan (37-26), Spain (33-31) and Slovenia (36-29), with their only defeat coming in match three to Croatia by a scoreline of 30-26. That defeat was only the second that the Eagles have conceded in their last 10 matches in all competitions.
Meanwhile, France got to the knockout stages by the skin of their teeth, clinching fourth place in Group B with five points in as many matches, including a record of two wins, one draw and two losses.
Their two victories came in the final two matches against Argentina (28-21) and Hungary (24-24), the draw came against Egypt 26-26, and the two defeats were against Norway and Denmark.
Les Bleus have now won six, lost three and drawn one of their last 10 matches in all competitions. However, they were beaten by this opponent in a friendly last month 35-30.
