Jannik Sinner is the seventh seed in the National Bank Open in Toronto. He takes on unseeded Gael Monfils for a place in the last four against either Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul. Sinner is a career high eighth at present and up to fifth in the LIve ATP Race. A win over Monfils will take him to fourth on that list and cement his chances of reaching the end of season ATP Tour finals. The 21-year-old recorded his 40th win of the year when beating Andy Murray in the last 16. He didn't need to go on court though after his opponent withdrew due to an abdominal strain. That means Sinner is in the last eight after having to play just one match. That was a straight sets win over fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini. Sinner has reached at least the last eight in four successive tournaments now. He's won one hard court title in 2023 and lost in two other finals. He leads Monfils 3-1 in previous meetings (all on hard courts) with the last match in the final of a Bulgarian tournament two years ago.

Gael Monfils gained entry into this outdoor hard court Masters main draw via a protected rankings. He was the world number 276 at the start of this tournament and had only played nine ATP Tour matches all year. His run this week wasn't expected as he'd only won three of those nine matches. Some glimpses of form were shown in Washington last week when winning two matches (one against a player ranked 695) to reach the last 16 where he lost to Tallon Griekspoor in three sets. The former world number six (achieved seven years ago) is only a few weeks away from his 37th birthday. This week has seen him defeat Christopher Eubanks in three sets (losing the middle one), fourth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets and then lucky loser Aleksandar Vukic without dropping a set.  It's been a good run for Monfils but we go for the consistent Sinner to win this match.
