The WTA Bogota tournament has reached the semi-final stages, and in the first match, we will see Francesca Jones take on Tatjana Maria on Saturday evening. Jones has seen her world ranking tumble to 817th owing to an extended injury layoff, but that by no means should be used as an indication of her ability.  Reaching her first ever WTA semi-final has seen her climb 431 places in the rankings and winning this match will take her up to 302nd. The 22-year old Brit reached the quarter-final stages of the W25 Tucuman competition in February and has featured in three consecutive round of 16 matches since then. Jones has a decent record this year of 10-5 and has shown no signs of that shoulder injury that hampered her season last year. Here in Bogota, Jones has won all three of her matches in straight sets The Brit will know that she will be a massive underdog coming into this match, but that may work to her advantage with less pressure weighing on her shoulders. 

Ranked 66th in the world, Tatjana Maria has had an incredible career and does not look like she’s going anywhere anytime soon, even at the age of 35. She showed this with her incredible display at Wimbledon last year, where she reached the semi-final stages. This year, Maria has maintained a very good record of 16-10, with an even more impressive 5-1 on the clay surface. The German has already seen off the likes of Katrina Scott (6-1 6-4), Carolina Alves (6-2 6-4), and Nuria Brascaccio (6-3 6-2) in the previous rounds of this tournament and now sets her eyes on an opponent that is still working her way back to her best form. The wily defending champion has the class to prevail here, and it will be one of the shocks of the tournament if she were to bow out at the end of this one.
