Coco Vandeweghe starts the week ranked 164th in the world. The former world number nine is struggling with her fitness and has played only 13 matches all season. She has lost eight of those matches. Her latest defeat came at the start of April in Charleston in her season debut on clay. The American is making her 11th appearance at the French Open. She has played 15 matches in the major and has a record of five wins and 10 losses. Vandaweghe has in the last two editions been unable to progress past the qualifying rounds here. Last season she was eliminated in the first round of qualifying. The 31-year-old has struggled with a persistent right ankle injury since 2018. Last season she played 40 matches, the most she has managed since the first injury.
