Frances Tiafoe starts his third clay tournament of the season with a match against Jaume Munar at the Barcelona Open. This first-round clash will have the winner face Karen Khachanov or Cameron Norrie. It will be the fifth meeting between these two, and below we have a prediction.

Ninth seed Tiafoe will be hoping for a better run at Barcelona, having had a difficult year so far. His highlight of the season was getting to the Houston final, where he lost to Jenson Brooksby.

He is coming off a third-round defeat at the Monte Carlo Masters, which left him with a 10-8 record.

Home favorite Jaume Munar will be looking to make use of the biased support to extend his record against Tiafoe. In their four meetings before this, Munar claimed three wins, but he lost the latest, at Lyon 2024.

Munar hasn’t had a strong start to his clay campaign and could struggle in his fourth meeting with Tiafoe on clay. The Spaniard is coming off three straight defeats and has lost six times in his last 10 matches.

On clay, his best streak was in the Challenger Circuit, where he prevailed in Bad Waltersdorf. Ahead of the Barcelona Open, he lost in three sets to Daniel Altmaier in the qualifying rounds at the Monte Carlo Masters. That was his third straight loss on clay.
