Tenth seed Frances Tifoe and the unseeded Lorenzo Sonego will meet in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday. The winner will advance to play either Nicolas Jarry or Terence Atmane. Frances Tiafoe will look to tie this series with Sonego at two wins a piece. He has been in good form on hard courts in 2023 which should have him confident of a winning start here. The American put to a halt a three-match losing skid by winning his last match which was at the Laver Cup. This was his 38th victory this season and the 21st in 29 outings on hard courts. Tiafoe has won more matches on hard courts than on any other surface but the highlights of his season have come on clay and grass. Ranked currently 13th in the ATP, Tiafoe has won two tour titles this year.

Lorenzo Sonego has the advantage in this series and has defeated Tiafoe twice. His latest victory came on hard court in Miami earlier this year. Though he has struggled with his form all season, he will head into this match confident of another victory against the American. Sonego has compiled a 24-25 record and has lost 11 of the 20 matches he has played on hard courts. He defeated the qualifier Philip Sekulic in straight sets in the first round. The win allowed him to advance to this round for the first time and moved him up to 56th in the live ranking.
