Frances Tiafoe is the 24th seed at the French Open despite the fact he has never won a match at Roland Garros. The American has played here on seven previous occasions with one loss in the qualifying rounds and six first round exits. He hopes to finally get a win at Roland Garros when taking on unseeded Benjamin Bonzi. Tiafoe is the world number 27, two places below his career high ranking of 25th achieved earlier this month. He's had a mixed clay court season with a quarter final in Houston and then losing to Sebastian Baez in the Estoril final. He was beaten in the first round in Madrid and Rome. Tiafoe has won three clay court events on the Challenger Tour, so does have the ability to do well on this surface.

Benjamin Bonzi is world ranked 52nd which is a career high and 12 places higher than at the start of 2022. Bonzi is in the main draw here for the fourth time in his career but has never made it past the second round. The Frenchman won a Challenger Tour clay court event in Aix-en-Provence at the start of this month but didn't beat anyone ranked in the top 140. Another quarter final was reached in Bordeaux but now he steps back up to the ATP Main Tour. He did have success in Marseille earlier this year, getting to the final of the hard court tournament. There has only been one meeting between these two players and that was on the Challenger Tour eight years ago. Tiafoe won that match and it was played on clay. This looks like being a long match but Tiafoe can finally break his duck and win at Roland Garros.
