For the second time in their careers, Frances Tiafoe and Alexandre Muller are set to face off. This time they meet in the third round at the Madrid Masters, with the winner lined up to meet Matteo Arnaldi or Damir Dzumhur. Read on for our prediction of this match.

Tiafoe, the 16th seed, holds the head-to-head advantage, having beaten Muller at Acapulco in February. The American will hope that is the stepping stone for a deep run here, having struggled to stay consistent.

In the last 16 tournaments he has participated in, Tiafoe played more than two matches just once. In the last round here, his opponent, Luciano Darderi, retired during the second set.

While Tiafoe’s second-round match lasted just over one hour, Muller needed 2.5 hours to beat Ugo Humbert in three sets. The fact that the Frenchman started from the first round means he has spent even more time on the court.

With two wins in Madrid, Muller has risen past his early elimination from Munich. While largely he has struggled, this season he’s had two major highlights.

He lifted the Hong Kong title and then advanced to the Rio de Janeiro final. In his last six tour events before Madrid, Muller failed to go past two rounds.
