Action in Group D of the outdoor hard court United Cup begins with France taking on Switzerland. This group also includes Italy and is being played in Sydney, Australia. Who will make a winning start? Read our match prediction.

France will be relying a great deal on Ugo Humbert. The world number 14 has had a strong 2024 and his last tournament saw him beaten by Alexander Zverev in the Paris Masters final. He's won two titles in 2024 but wasn't part of the French squad that reached the last four of this team tournament earlier this year.

Humbert is up against Dominic Stricker in his singles match and won their only previous meeting last year. Stricker is the world number 300 but got into this tournament on his protected ranking of 94th but hasn't shown much form in 2024.

France are without Caroline Garcia so have world number 123 Chloe Paquet playing singles for them. Her best results this year have come on lower circuits and on clay. Paquet faces Belinda Bencic who is 487th in the rankings but here on her protected ranking of 15th.

Bencic reached a recent WTA 125 event in France and should win her match. That'd take us to a deciding mixed doubles and France look to have the edge there with Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Elixane Lechemia.
