France vs South Africa Prediction & Betting Tips - Rugby World Cup
by Devesh Jaganath in Rugby World Cup Predictions
The final match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals is a blockbuster as France prepares to take on South Africa on Sunday evening. The winner of this match will face either England or Fiji in the last four. They say you should save the best for last, and that’s exactly what we have here as the tournament favourites look to overcome the defending world champions. France clinched the top spot in Pool A with 18 points, while South Africa came second in Pool B, behind the world number ones Ireland. Is this going to be Les Bleus' year, or can the Springboks go back-to-back?

France - South Africa: Form Analysis
France are the favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Cup despite relinquishing the Six Nations title to Ireland earlier this year. Nevertheless, Les Bleus have been excellent in this competition and ran through their group unbeaten. They faced a huge challenge in their first match against the three-time champs New Zealand but came through with flying colours, winning the match 27-13. The hosts followed that up with a 27-12 win over Uruguay before recording the biggest winning margin of the competition overcoming Namibia 96-0. That win secured their place in the last eight, but it did not stop them from thumping Italy 60-7 in their final group-stage match. Adding to their confidence will be the fact that they beat South Africa in their last meeting 30-26 back in November last year.
Meanwhile, South Africa had an underwhelming 2023 Rugby Championship campaign, where they were beaten by New Zealand to the title. However, since then, the Springboks have been much improved and handed the All Blacks a record-breaking defeat at Twickenham ahead of this competition. They were drawn in the pool of death but made a very good start, beating Scotland 18-3. They then overpowered Romania 76-0 but were unable to get past the mighty Irish, losing the match 13-8. The world champions sealed their spot in this round with a win over Tonga in their final match, though Scotland remained in the hunt right up to the last match as well. While France did win the last match between these sides, that brought an end to a seven-match winning streak that was held by the Boks dating back to June 2010.

France & South Africa Squad Analysis
Fabien Galthie has made just one change to the side that he fielded against Italy, and from a French perspective, it is a big one. After suffering a facial fracture during the group stages, Antoine Dupont will return to the starting 15 for this match. Anthony Jelonch keeps his spot in the back row, while Francois Cros secures a place among the six forwards listed on the bench.
As has been the case for the entire tournament, Jacques Nienaber has surprised most with his selection for this match. The Springboks coach has opted to start Manie Libbok and Cobus Reinach in the halves pairing at the expense of Handre Pollard and Faf de Klerk. Further upfield, Duane Vermeulen also gets the nod for the number eight jersey, with Jasper Wiese making way.

Our France vs South Africa Prediction
This has all the makings of a World Cup final. France are in excellent form at the moment and are the favourites. They will also have the best part of 80,000 fans cheering them on at the Stade de France. However, you can never write off the Springboks, who have fond memories at this venue, having lifted the trophy here in 2007. We’re expecting a very close match here and are opting for the Springboks to keep the score within seven points. It would not be a huge shock if the Southern Hemisphere side goes on to clinch the win, either. Our France vs South Africa prediction: Handicap South Africa +7.
