France vs Canada Prediction & Betting Tips - Men's Olympic Tournament
by Kennedy Kechula | in Men's Olympic Tournament Predictions
Hosts France will continue their Men’s Basketball Olympics campaign with a match against Canada in the quarter-finals. France finished second in Group B with two wins while Canada topped Group A after winning all their three matches. Here’s our preview of this high-stakes clash, analyzing some of the key stats then offering our prediction.
The winner of this match will set up a semi-final showdown with either Greece or Germany. Making it to the last four will ensure, at the very least, a chance to battle for the bronze medal. This will be the ninth time that France and Canada square off.
They have met three times at the Olympics stage with the most recent being at the Sydney Games in 2000. France have the head-to-head advantage over Canada. It is, however, the North Americans who bookies favour to not only win here but to go on and challenge for gold.

France - Canada: Form Analysis
France will have to quickly re-group after they ended their group stage campaign with defeat. Vincent Collet’s men were well beaten by in-form Germany who claimed a convincing 85-71 win. Both teams had already secured their places in the knockout rounds but were fighting for top spot.
The hosts had a poor second quarter, managing just nine points as Germany put up 24. Having length on their side, France were also outrebounded by Germany on both ends of the court. Les Bleus have now lost four times in their last six games.
But as they have a strong record against Canada, they will fancy their chances here. France won six of the eight times they faced off with Canada. They also won twice in the three times the two nations battled at the Olympics. Their last Summer Games showdown was at Sydney 2000. France won in the quarter-finals on their way to the second of their three silver medals.
Canada have had their shortcomings in defence but are good offensively.
Canada were magnificent in the group stages, winning all their three matches and put up a combined 267 points. They began their return to the Olympics after a 24-year hiatus with an 86-79 victory against Greece.
Jordi Fernadez’s men would follow this up with a 93-83 success versus Australia and then an 88-85 victory over Spain. They have been one of the most exciting offensive teams and averaged 89 points a game. However, what they have in offence, they’ve lacked in defence.
This is something that could end up hindering their progress when they come up against the top teams. Canada defeated France the last time the two nations met, which was at last year’s World Cup. They won 95-65 on their way to securing bronze.

France have a star-studded squad with most players plying their trade in the NBA. Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert are defensive anchors and both sit in the top two positions for blocks per game. Wembanyama, who is putting up a team-high 17 points per game, is also second for rebounds in the tournament.
France, who are shooting 45.5% from the field, have three players averaging at least 10 points.
Both nations will be parading star-studded teams in this quarter-final battle.
Canada are also littered with talent from the NBA. Among them is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The OKC Thunder guard has averaged 19 points in 27.9 minutes per game in Paris. He, however, isn’t their leading scorer.
This honor falls on the Toronto Raptors’ R.J. Barrett who is pouring in 21 points on average. That tally has him fourth on the leaderboard. Canada, shooting 48.9% from the field, have three players putting up double-figure points.
