Hosts France will begin their 2024 Olympics Men’s Basketball campaign with a mouthwatering showdown against Brazil in Group B. This will mark the fourth meeting between the two at the Olympic Games. Below is our analysis of the match and a prediction.

France didn’t have the smoothest of preps for the Games, and come here on a three-game losing streak. All those defeats were against teams competing in Paris, the most recent ending 83-82 against Australia.

Three-time Olympics runners-up, Vincent Collett’s men will be keen to add to their only Gold, won in 1948. On the way to that triumph, they defeated Brazil in the semis. France, who defeated Brazil more recently in 2019 in a friendly match, have assembled a star-studded roster.

Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, Nicolas Batum, Frank Ntilikina and Guerschon Yabule are some of their players.

Brazil are making a 16th appearance at the Olympics having missed the last edition in Tokyo. Playing as hosts in 2016, they failed to qualify from their group. Brazil are three-time Bronze winners. Gustavo de Conti’s men booked their slot here via the qualifying process in Latvia.

Unlike before, the two-time world champions won’t have a big contingent of NBA players. This time only two in the 12-man squad are attached to an NBA team. They are Gui Santos of the Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies’ Maozinha Pereira.

This should not deter them though, as they come up against the star-studded French. Brazil have a strong record in the Olympics against France. They have won two of their three meetings with their most recent success being in the 1984 tournament.
