The 10th round of the 2024 Formula 1 season heads to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend! Red Bull’s Max Verstappen currently leads the 2024 Driver standings with 194 points. In second is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on 138 points and third is Lando Norris of McLaren on 131 points. 

After a few mixed performances in recent races, Red Bull were firmly expected to romp back to the front in Barcelona. However, in what was an incredible qualifying session, Lando Norris in the McLaren emerged to clinch pole position ahead of Max Verstappen. This marks only the second-ever pole for the Englishman, with his previous top spot in qualifying coming back in 2021. Norris posted a stunning final lap of 1m11.383s to edge the Dutchman by two-hundredths of a second. Behind them, was the seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who turned the tables on teammate George Russell. The Mercedes drivers will make up the second row, claiming P3 and P4, respectively. 

The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz managed a somewhat disappointing P5 and P6, while Pierre Gasly was arguably the shock of the round, securing seventh in the Alpine. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez had another underwhelming qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, only managing eighth but will be forced to give up three places due to the penalty he picked up at the Canada GP. As a result, Sebastian Ocon and Oscar Piastry move up to eighth and ninth, while hometown hero Fernando Alonso will start from 10th. The Spanish Grand Prix is shaping up to be a memorable one with Lando Norris looking for his second Grand Prix title of the year, but can he hold off the formidable Dutchman alongside him?
