Game three of the NHL Stanley Cup gets underway with the Vegas Golden Knights looking to go up 3-0 when they take on the Florida Panthers. Vegas defended their home ice to open the series, winning games one and two with relative ease. Their last outing resulted in a comfortable 7-2 home win over the Panthers to give them a 2-0 series advantage. It's a good omen for the Golden Knights who are seeking their first ever Stanley Cup trophy in the team’s short history. Teams who take a 2-0 lead in the NHL’s championship series go on to hoist the cup in 31 of 34 attempts in the expansion era. A win here would give them one hand on the cup heading into what would be a close out situation in game four. The Golden Knights have now won their last three in a row following their game two victory. On the road, Vegas has been able to maintain consistent results which will give them confidence of going up 3-0 in Florida. The visitors have won six of their eight away trips in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Panthers had their five game winning streak brought to an end when they fell 5-2 to Vegas in game one of these finals. The game two loss represents the first time Florida has suffered back-to-back defeats since falling behind 3-1 to the Bruins in the first round. They would respond in that series with three straight wins to upset heavily favored Boston. They’ll need to channel some of that desperation energy that propelled them in the Bruins series as they are facing a ‘must-win’ situation here. It would be a seemingly impossible task to claw back from a 3-0 deficit, meaning that pulling this one back to 2-1 in front of the home fans is vital. Florida is only 4-3 on their home ice this playoff run but have won their last two on the bounce at the BB&T Center.
