World number 10, Felix Auger-Aliassime, will take on 104th-ranked wildcard Arthur Fils in the quarter-final of the ATP Lyon Open on Thursday afternoon. The winner of this clash will go on to meet either Tommy Paul or Brandon Nakashima in the semi-finals. Auger-Aliassime has found it difficult since stepping onto the clay this season, bowing out in the first round of the two tournaments he’s participated in. At the Madrid Masters, the Canadian pushed Dusan Lajovic to a final set tiebreak but came up short. In Rome, at the start of the month, he was shocked by qualifier Alexei Popyrin who also sent him packing in three sets. Following his first clay win over Pablo Llamas Ruiz here in Lyon, Auger-Aliassime is now 13-9 for the year but 1-2 on the clay. He hasn’t won two games in a row since the Indian Wells Masters back in March, where he reached the quarter-final stage. Auger-Aliassime finished last season with a very good record of 60-27 and is the number-one seed here in Lyon. However, he will need to start getting a few results soon, or he could find himself starting to slip in the rankings.

The wildcard, Arthur Fils, has worked hard this year and has seen it pay off in his world ranking. The Frenchman began the year ranked 252nd but started the season excellently, winning the Oeiras 2 Challenger event, which saw him break into the top 200. He followed up with another final appearance two weeks later and back-to-back semi-finals in Montpellier and Marseille. He is now 22-9 for the year and 8-5 on the clay. A win here would see him move into the top 100. Fils defeated qualifier Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets in his opening match here in Lyon. He went on to face Mikael Ymer in the second round, who was disqualified in the first set after smashing his racket into the match referee's chair. He now turns his attention to a player ranked almost 100 places above him but will know that his opponent is not at his best.
