Sixth seed Frances Tiafoe takes on wild card Feliciano Lopez in the Mexican Open second round. The winner will take on eiher third seeded Taylor Fritz or Denis Shapovalov in the quarter finals. Tiafoe started the week ranked 15th. That's just one place below the career high 14th achieved in January of this year. Tiafoe has had a good year so far and is 16th in the ATP Race. 2023 began with him being part of the American team that won the United Cup. He won all five of his singles matches, including victories over Lorenzo Musetti and Daniel Evans. The 25-year-old reached the last 32 of the Australian Open, losing to Karen Khachanov. His only other singles tournament this year was in Dallas where he got to the quarter finals. This week has started with a straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka.

Feliciano Lopez received a wild card to play in this Mexican Open. The Spaniard is a lowly 1035th in the world and this is his first tournament of the year. He's 41 years old now and made his pro tennis debut 26 years ago. He was ranked 12th in 2015 and has announced this will be his last year on the ATP Tour. He beat Christopher Eubanks in straight sets in the first round getting revenge for a loss to the Australian in the 2022 Indian Wells tournament. His first round win ended a run of six successive losses. His last win was on grass at the Queen's Club in London when beating Bradley Klahn who was ranked 461st last June.and currently 476th. That was also his first ATP Tour main draw win since July 2021 and even then his opponent retired in the final set. Tiafoe can win this in straight sets.
