Thiago Monteiro makes his return to the Rio Open as a wildcard and will begin his tournament against the unseeded Facundo Diaz Acosta. They will battle in the first round with the winner playing Alejandro Tabilo or a yet-to-be-revealed qualifier for a quarter-final berth. Below is our prediction for this match.

Facundo Diaz Acosta debuted in Rio last season but was unfortunate to get eliminated without a win. He will hope this isn’t the case this time around.

The Argentine is having a shaky season and through nine outings, has managed just four wins. Currently, on a two-match losing run, Diaz Acosta was eliminated in the first round in Buenos Aires last time out.

This lacklustre start to the season has seen him plummet down in the ATP rankings and is currently placed 118th.

Thiago Monteiro earned a quarter-final finish last season in Rio. It was the second time he had made it that far in the competition since 2017.

The Brazilian has had the best of campaigns at his home event and only twice has he progressed past the second round. He will hope to not suffer another early exit and surpass the quarters.

Monteiro is also having a slow start to the season. He has lost four of seven outings and is on a two-match skid. Currently ranked 99th in the live ranking, Monteiro is coming off a qualifying-round loss in Buenos Aires.
