An Italian player will make it into the third round of the Rome Masters. That's guaranteed with unseeded Fabio Fognini up against the tenth seeded Jannik Sinner. Fognini is the former Italian number one but down to 57th in the latest ranking list. The 34-year-old was as high as ninth three years ago but as low as 62nd last month. He has only made the quarter finals of this event on one previous occasion, that was five years ago. This year has seen Fognini reach the last eight of the clay court tournament held in Buenos Aires. He followed that with a run to the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Another semi-final was reached in Belgrade but no player in the top 65 was beaten. The first round in Rome saw him win in two tight sets against Dominic Thiem who is still struggling in his comeback.

Jannik Sinner is ranked 13th in the world but was 10th at the start of the year. The new Italian number one has never made it past the third round of the Rome Masters but did get to the French Open quarter finals in 2020. Sinner has reached four quarter finals this year and the most recent of those was in the Monte Carlo Masters beating Andrey Rublev before losing to Alexander Zverev. He then lost in the last 16 in Madrid, being beaten by Felix Auger-Aliassime. Sinner had a straightforward win over Pedro Martinez in round one without dropping a set. This is his first match against Fognini and can be backed to get the win.
