A first tour semifinal of the season beckons for unseeded Fabian Marozsan when he plays 16th seed Hubert Hurkacz in Shanghai on Thursday. The winner of this quarterfinal will next play either Ben Shelton or Sebastian Korda. Fabian Marozsan recorded his second top-10 victory of the year by defeating world number nine Casper Ruud in the last round. He won in three sets and is now through to the last eight at a Masters for the first time. Marozsan, though largely competing outside the top level, has had an impressive campaign. He has compiled a 43-24 record and has won two challenger titles. The Hungarian is up a massive 26 places in the live ranking and is now ranked 65th which is a new career high.

Hubert Hurkacz has moved up one place to 16th in the live ranking. He defeated crowd favourite Zhang Zhizhen in three sets to advance to this round. The Pole is now through to his fifth Masters 1000 quarterfinal. He will hope to maintain this momentum and end up as the last man standing like he did in Miami and Paris. Hurkacz has compiled a 36-20 record this year and has won one tour title. Twenty of his victories have come in 30 outings on hard courts. Hurkacz has won four of the five quarterfinals he has played this year with two of those being on hard courts.
