Second seeded Mayar Sherif takes on unseeded Eva Lys in the Hamburg European Open first round. The winner of this clay court match will face unseeded Panna Uvardy in round two. Sheriff is the world number 31 (her career high) so looking likely to be seeded at the upcoming US Open. The Egyptian is up a place in the live rankings but even if winning this tournament can only climb one place higher. Sherif appreciates playing on clay and last week got to the last four in Palermo. June saw her win two WTA 125 clay court events held in Croatia and Spain. Her best run in higher level tournaments came in the WTA 1000 clay court event in Madrid where the Egyptian beat four top 40 ranked players to reach the quarter finals where she lost in three sets to Aryna Sabalenka. 

Eva Lys is down at 167th in the latest world rankings list. The German was as high as 112th in mid-April but then saw her form dip. Four clay court matches in a row were lost, including her having to retire in Madrid after winning just one of the first six games against Dayana Yastremska. Only one grass court tournament was played and that saw her lose in the second qualifying round of Wimbledon. Back on clay her form has seen some improvement with a run to the last eight in Contrexeville but no top 100 ranked players were beaten. That was only the second time this year that Lys has made it to the last 16 of a tournament. We go for Sherif to win this in straight sets.
