World number 494 Ernesto Escobedo will take on unseeded Sebastian Ofner in the first round in Acapulco. The winner of this first-ever meeting between the two will battle either Alex de Minaur or Taro Daniel next. Ernesto Escobedo is back in the main draw of the Mexican Open for the first since 2018. In his previous two appearances in these six years, he was unable to get past the qualifying rounds. Mexico’s number one will now hope the home crowd will be fully behind him as he plots a season turnaround. Escobedo has had a torrid start to the year and has lost five of the six matches he has contested. His sole win came on clay and has played only once on hard courts. But as he is a strong performer on hard courts, having won over 200 matches on the surface, he should be a handful for Ofner. He is coming off a first-round exit in Los Cabos.

Sebastian Ofner is having a better season than Escobedo but has struggled with a lack of consistency. He has compiled a 5-6 record and has registered four of his wins on hard courts. The Austrian is switching back to hard courts after a poor Golden Swing campaign. He lost all three matches he played on clay in Cordoba, Buenos Aires, and Rio. The current world number 37 made the semifinals in Hong Kong, his first event of the year. This was a promising start but he hasn’t reached such heights again and has lost five of his last seven fixtures.
