England vs Fiji Prediction & Betting Tips - Rugby World Cup
by Devesh Jaganath | in Rugby World Cup Predictions
The penultimate match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals will see England taking on Fiji on Sunday afternoon. The winner of this match will face either France or South Africa in the semi-final. While England have not set the stage alight in this year's competition, they did what was needed with a favourable draw and emerged as Pool D winners. Fiji have become the World Cup darlings and made it to the final eight with a wholehearted effort to claim the second spot in Pool C. Can the Flying Fijians claim a famous win over the Red Roses to reach their first-ever semi-final?

England - Fiji: Form Analysis
England had a very poor lead-up to this competition. They finished fourth in the Six Nations earlier in the year, while they also lost the Calcutta Cup to Scotland in the first match of that tournament. However, after an underwhelming warm-up campaign, they got their 2023 RWC underway with a 27-10 victory over Argentina, led by George Ford, who scored all 27 points. They then beat Japan 34-12 in week two before securing their place in the knockout stages with a thumping 71-0 victory over Chile. Having already qualified, the Red Roses were arguably a little complacent in their final match against Samoa. But they rallied late and managed to scrape an 18-17 win to keep their 100% record intact. Having been drawn in an easier Pool, it will be interesting to see how England fares here against arguably their toughest opponent to date in the competition.
Meanwhile, Fiji’s path to the final eight was eventful, to say the least. The Pacific Islanders started their World Cup campaign with an incredible battle against Wales, which they lost 32-26. However, their performance in the match announced them as genuine contenders, and they lived up to that expectation. The Flying Fijians outclassed Australia a week later 22-15 and moved into the driver's seat for second place in the group by beating Georgia 17-12 in their third match. With just one point to get in the final match against Portugal, Fiji almost fluffed their lines, losing the match 24-23. However, they progressed in second place thanks to a bonus point earned for losing by less than a seven-point margin. Notably, these two sides met back in August in a warm-up match, and Fiji beat England 30-22.

England & Fiji Squad Analysis
Steve Borthwick had to make a big call at fly-half for this match and has opted to hand the number 10 jersey to Owen Farrell at the expense of George Ford. Marcus Smith takes on the full-back role, replacing Freddie Steward, and Elliot Daly joins the lineup, prompting Jonny May to move to the right flank. Joe Marchant returns to outside centre, while Manu Tuilagi takes up the inside centre position.
Fiji opts for a lineup that includes ten players who started the match against England at Twickenham. Unfortunately, Temo Mayanavanua is sidelined due to a knee injury, and he is replaced by Api Ratuniyarawa, a seasoned former London Irish player. However, Ratuniyarawa is not part of the matchday squad. Tevita Ikanivere earns his first start in the tournament after making appearances from the bench in every pool-stage match. Additionally, Semi Radradra returns to the lineup, taking his place on the wing.

Our England vs Fiji Prediction
This is possibly the most evenly matched of the four quarter-final matches this weekend. While England have a perfect record in this competition, they have been far from impressive and will be pushed to their limit here by the Fijians. The Pacific Islanders have already shown us they cannot be counted out of any match, so we’re backing them on the +12 handicap - though it would not surprise us if they went on to win this match. Our England vs Fiji prediction: Handicap Fiji +12.
