England vs Australia Prediction & Betting Tips - The Ashes - Fifth Test
by Devesh Jaganath in Cricket Predictions
The Ashes will come to a conclusion this week as England and Australia will lock horns in the final Test of the series starting on Thursday. The visitors currently lead 2-1 and will retain the Ashes as they cannot lose the series with one match left to play. England were bitterly unlucky in the last match as rain interrupted play and cut the match short. The hosts delivered an excellent performance with the bat, showing off Bazball at its finest. Six of their top seven batsmen scored half-centuries in the first innings, led by Zak Crawley’s 189 runs in better than a run a ball, while Jonny Bairstow ended one run short of a century. Mark Wood and Chris Woakes were excellent with the ball, with the latter claiming a fifer in the first innings. Ben Stokes’ men were in the ascendency for the majority of the match, and after posting 592 in the first innings, they took a 275-run lead. Wood smashed through the top order of the Aussies in the second innings, and the visitors were in big trouble at 108/4, but England were unable to get the job done as day five was washed out. Stokes has since said that while they are disappointed at the result, they will give absolutely everything to win this final match and level the series.
Meanwhile, Australia did what they do best in the last Test, which is finding a way out of difficult positions. The visitors were far from their best in the match, but another stellar innings from Mitchell Marsh steadied the ship, allowing them to post a respectable target of 317 in the first innings. Josh Hazlewood picked up five wickets but went for 126 runs in his bowling spell, while none of the other Aussie bowlers managed figures of much significance. In the second innings, it was Marsh again that stopped the collapse, and together with Marnus Labuschagne, they managed to hold off a rampant Mark Wood in favourable bowling conditions. Andrew McDonald has mentioned that there could be a number of changes to his starting lineup, with the likes of Starc and Marsh both carrying injuries, which could open the door for recalls for Todd Murphy and Scott Boland. With that result, Australia have retained the urn but will want to win the series outright.

With rain predicted for large parts this weekend, we may well see another interrupted match which will suit the Aussies just fine, as a draw will be enough for them to win the series outright.
