Wildcard Emma Raducanu and the qualifier Rebeka Masrova are set to meet in the first round at the Indian Wells Open. Raducanu will be looking to better last season's performance when she reached the fourth round in this tournament. That was her best-ever result here and she will be out to defend and add to the points earned then. Raducanu played three times previously at Indian Wells and in each season she finished one round better than the previous campaign. The Briton has had a slow start to the year as she gets back to full fitness after an injury-plagued 2023 season. She has compiled a 3-4 record with all seven matches taking place on hard courts. The 21-year-old lost her last two fixtures and is coming off a first-round exit in Doha. A former world number 10, Raducanu is currently ranked outside the WTA top 200.

Rebeka Masarova is also having a turbulent year as well, and has lost more than she has won. She has compiled a 4-6 record, nine of her matches, including all of her victories taking place on hard courts. The Spaniard will hope the momentum gained from advancing to the main draw for a second time will see her through here. Masarova has never won a main draw match at Indian Wells and was eliminated in this round last year. Before arriving in Coachella, the 24-year-old had lost three successive fixtures with the last coming in the first round in Dubai. Advancing to this round has moved her up two places in the live ranking to 94th.This is the first-ever encounter between Masarova and Raducanu, and the winner will play 30th seed Dayana Yastremska in the second round.
