Sixteenth seed Emma Navarro and the unseeded Jasmine Paolini will play each other next at the Qatar Open. They will square off in the first round with the winner going on to play either Elise Mertens or Peyton Stearns. Emma Navarro is making her Doha debut and is coming off a third-round Australian Open finish. The American is having a superb start to the year and has won 10 of the 12 matches she has so far played. She began the season with a semifinal finish in Adelaide before going on to win the title in Hobart. This was the first tour title of her career. She will be hoping for another deep run and having defeated Paolini before, she will be confident of a winning start here. The 23-year-old is currently ranked 23rd in the WTA.

Jasmine Paolini lost to Navarro in their only other encounter which was last September in San Diego. She will be out for revenge to help boost her shaky start to the year. The Italian has played eight matches so far and has lost half of those. She has lost her last two matches and was defeated in the first round in Linz last time out. Despite her wobbly form, she has managed to move up one place in the live ranking and is ranked 24th. Paolini has never won a main draw match in Doha. She was defeated in the first round in her only other appearance which was two seasons ago.
