Third seed Cori Gauff’s US Open title defence pits her against 13th seed Emma Navarro fourth round. Read on for our prediction of this match scheduled for Sunday.

Emma Navarro won the last time she matched up with Gauff. That was in July on grass in Wimbledon. It was just one victory in her superb season and the American will be confident of another win in this fixture.

The 23-year-old, who has compiled a 50-20 record, defeated 19th seed Marta Kostyuk in the third round. She won in three sets after claiming her first two wins in straights. Coming this far makes this her best performance at Flushing Meadows.

Now up to 11th in the live ranking, Navarro had never won a main draw match in her two previous appearances in New York.

Cori Gauff won the US Open title last year to claim her maiden Grand Slam crown and is a favorite to emerge champion again. The American won her opening two rounds without dropping a set. In the third, she came back from losing the first set against Elina Svitolina.

Gauff, who has compiled a 41-14 record, defeated Navarro in their first career meeting back in January. She won in straight sets on her way to claiming the Auckland title. So far this year, Gauff hasn’t failed to reach the second week of competition at a major.

She made two semi-final appearances at this level. Gauff has dropped to sixth in the live ranking after losing 1,760 ranking points. The winner here will take on Paula Badosa or Wang Yafan in the quarter-finals
