Eighth seed Emma Navarro will meet fellow American Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals of the Canadian Open. In the run up to their second career meeting, let’s take a look at the preview and a prediction for the match.
Anisimova has been in terrific form in Toronto. She has won all her four fixtures in straight sets, beating top players. Those she defeated this week are Daria Kasatkina, Anna Klinskaya and Aryna Sabalenka.
In the quarters, she overcame Sabalenka by the loss of six games. The American is now one win away from playing her first tour final in two years. Anisimova spent much of last season out injured and is playing with a protected ranking. Currently ranked 66th in the live ranking, Anismiova defeated Navarro at Indian Wells in 2022 in their only encounter to date.
Emma Navarro is having her best season at tour level and is targeting her second title. The American started the year placed outside the WTA top 30. She has gradually improved her ranking and is now up to 13th in the live ranking.
This is a new career high placing for her and another win will inch her closer to the top 10. A champion in Hobart earlier in the year, Navarro has compiled a 45-17 record, registering 24 of her victories on hard courts.
To advance to this round, Navarro defeated compatriot Taylor Townsend in straight sets. She has also won all her matches In Toronto without dropping a set. The winner between her and Anisimova will battle Diana Shnaider or Jessica Pegula for the title on Monday.
