The American hard court season heads to Washington for this ATP 500 event. Vasek Pospisil takes on Emilio Gomez in the first round with the winner facing 12th seeded Sebastian Korda in the second round. Pospisil is ranked 61st in the world which is exactly where he was in the rankings at the start of this year. In terms of ranking points earned this calendar year, the Canadian is 208th. This is only his ninth tournament of 2021 and his best performance was on grass at Eastbourne where he got to the last eight. He didn't do so well at Wimbledon, losing in the second round to Frances Tiafoe. He got to the final of this tournament seven years ago, losing to Milos Raonic.

Emilio Gomez is the world number 165, a drop of five places since the start of 2021. At one time this year, he dropped down to 204th and 131st for points earned this year. He's done well to get to the main draw after having to win two matches to do so. He was seeded 10th in the qualifying rounds but beat second seed Liam Broady to reach the main draw. He's spent his year playing on the Challenger tour as well as the main ATP circuit. March saw him get to the quarter finals of a Challenger event in Cleveland. The following month he won a Challenger event in his home country of Ecuador but didn't beat anyone in the top 260. He lost in the final of a Challenger event in Little Rock, USA, but hasn't got past the last 16 of an ATP event all year. Back Pospisil to get the win here.
