World number 58 Emil Ruusuvuori will take on 67th-ranked Marcos Giron in the first round of the ATP Toronto Open on Tuesday. The winner of this encounter will face Holger Rune in the round of 16. These two have only met once in the past at Wimbledon in 2021, and Giron emerged victorious. After overcoming top 30 player Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round in Washington last week, Ruusuvuori was knocked out in the following round by Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. That result followed four consecutive first-round exits at the Queen’s Club, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, and Bastad. The Finn’s poor run over the last couple of months has seen his record for the year dip to 23-22, while his ranking has gone from inside the top 30 back in April to outside the top 50. Ruusuvuori’s best result this year came in the Netherlands, where he reached the semi-final before bowing out to Tallon Griekspoor. However, despite his poor lead-up to this tournament, the Finn is showing up as a strong favourite with the bookies. 

Meanwhile, Marcos Giron will be hoping for a better showing in Canada this year than what he managed last season when he was sent home in the first round. He found himself in a tricky opening qualifying match against Nick Chappen, who won the second set and stayed in the match as long as he could until Giron secured victory with a late break point in the third set. Giron has been knocked out in the first round in four of his last five tournaments, with the only exception coming at Wimbledon, where he went just one round deeper. The American has seen his ranking improve and drop significantly this season, from 74th in May to 57th in June and back to 68th as it stands. His record currently reads as 20-19 and 7-6 on the hard surface, and he is the clear outsider in this match.
