Emil Ruusuvuori and Benjamin Bonzi, both unseeded, will battle each other in the first round at the Hong Kong Tennis Open. The winner will then advance to play second seed Karen Khachanov for a place in the quarterfinals. Emil Ruusuvuori had a difficult 2023 campaign and won only one more match than the total he lost. He finished ranked 69th in the world with a 31-30 record. One of his defeats came against Bonzi at the start of the year. Ruusuvuori, who is a strong performer on outdoor hard courts, won the majority of his victories (13) on the surface. He did however lose 11 times on outdoor hard courts. His last Singles match was in November in the Davis Cup.

Benjamin Bonzi ended his season early in October after losing his opening-round tie at the Paris Masters. It was a disappointing end after he had made the final of the Brest Challenger leading up to the year’s final Masters tournament. The Frenchman also had a topsy-turvy 2023 campaign and finished with a 29-26 record. But despite this, the year did see him earn his first two tour final appearances. One of those came on outdoor hard court at the Maharashtra Open in India. Bonzi, who finished the year ranked 73rd in the world, has won two of the three meetings with Ruusuvuori. The most recent came on his way to the final in Pune last January. He won 2-0 and will be hoping for another similar outcome.
