Qualifier Ella Seidel bids to cause an upset in round one of the Transylvania Open in Cluj, Romania.  Round one sees her face the eighth seed Jaqueline Cristian for a place in the last 16. Who'll make it into round two? Here's our match prediction. 

Unseeded opposition will be faced in the next round, either Anna Blinkova or qualifier Sara Sorribes Tormo. Romanian Jaqueline Cristian is ranked 73rd but  down to 86th as she reached the last four here in 2024.

That saw her get to the last four and a quarter-final was also reached here in 2021. Her best performance this year came in the Australian Open with a run to round three before losing to Eva Lys in three sets.

Ella Seidel has had one previous match against Cristian. That was in 2023 with the Romanian winning in three sets but that was on clay and this is an indoor hard court match. The German is 143rd in the rankings so had to qualify to reach this main draw.

Seidel managed to win both her qualifiers in straight sets to get into the main draw of a WTA tournament for only the second time this year. Her best results in 2025 have come on the ITF circuit with a quarter-final in Porto.
