Elise Mertens will continue with her Monastir title defence this Thursday when she meets Eva Lys in the second round. Seeded top at the competition, predictions favor Mertens to win this match.

In her quest for a third straight Jasmine Open title, Mertens overcame Anastasia Zakharova in the first round. That win, in straight sets of 6-2, 6-0 pushed the Belgian to a 25-21 record for the season.

She has never lost a match at this tournament and is tipped to power through after her strong showing at the US Open. The 28-year-old got to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

By beating Zakharova in the last round, Mertens notched her 11th straight win at Monastir, spanning the last two years. Heading into this game, the world number 32 has claimed 15 of her wins on hardcourts.

Eva Lys is making her debut appearance at the Jasmine Open and she wouldn’t have wished for a tougher opposition. The world number 126 powered her way past Lesia Tsurenko via straight sets in the first round.

Lys arrived for this competition off the back of an early exit at the US Open. The German had won three qualifying round matches before meeting Marie Bouzkova in the first round in New York, and lost 2-1. Lys is yet to win a title at tour level and the gulf in experience with her opponent is massive.

She has mostly featured in ITF and Challenger events and after her first round win she has now compiled a 25-14 record, with eight of her wins being on hard court.

The winner here will meet either Greet Minnen or Zeynep Sonmez in the third round.
