Elina Svitolina is the top seed for the Monterrey Open. It would be a truly emotional moment if the Ukranian was to lift the trophy at the weekend. Svitolina takes on qualifier Viktorija Tomova in the second round, which is the last 16. The winner of this match faces either fifth seeded Camila Osorio or wildcard Marcela Zacarias in the quarter final. Svitolina is the world number 15 but down four places in the live rankings and was as high as fourth last year. The Ukranian hasn't made a great start to the new year. The third round of the Australian Open was reached but a win here would take her into her first quarter final of 2022. Svitolina nearly didn't play her first round match in this tournament. Fate produced a match against the Russian player Anastasia Potapova. Only when it was announced that Russian players would have to play as neutrals, did Svitolina decide to play and she only lost three games. Any winnings this week are being given to the Ukranian army.

Viktorija Tomova is the world number 103 which is a career-high ranking. The Bulgarian was as low as 119 in early January and 140th this time last year. Highlights of her year so far have been winning three qualifying matches to make it to the first round of the Australian Open. Her run ended with a straight sets loss to Alize Cornet. Tomova lost in her first match in the three tournaments that have followed but has got back into winning ways this week in Monterrey. Two matches had to be won to qualify for the main draw and she then beat another qualifier Diane Perry in the first round, losing only four games. This is a massive step up for her though.
