World number 508 Elina Svitolina and 26th seed Martina Trevisan will battle in the first round of the French Open on Monday. Advancing from this tie for either of the two will set up a second-round showdown with the qualifier Strom Hunter. Elina Svitolina is playing on a protected ranking and started last week ranked outside of the WTA top 500. But winning the Strasbourg Open has boosted her almost 300 places to number 191 in the live ranking. The Ukrainian had dropped in the world ranking after being inactive for a year following the birth of her first child. She has played 14 matches so far, all on clay, and has won eight of those. Svitolina is making her 12 appearance at the French Open and has three times made it through to the quarterfinals. She has never lost a first-round match at the tournament and will be eager not to see this record broken.

Martina Trevisan is up two places to number 24 in the live ranking. This is due to her picking up 59 ranking points at the Morocco Open where she made the quarterfinals. She retired injured in her quarterfinal tie with eventual finalist Julia Grabher and will hope to be ready for this match. Trevisan made it to the semifinals here last season and will be looking to defend the points earned then. The Italian has struggled with her form this year and currently has lost more matches than she has won. Trevisan is a strong performer on clay but has found the going tough this season and has won four matches, the same as she has lost.
