Wildcard Elena Svitolina and unseeded Linda Fruhvirtova will on Monday meet in the first round of the Birmingham Classic. Svitolina is making her grass-court debut for the season with this tournament. She has struggled on grass in her career but will hope the form she has been in this year sees her excel in Birmingham. The Ukrainian had a belated start to the season as she was on maternity leave. She made her return in April and has so far won 12 of the 19 matches she has played. The 28-year-old also has one title in the bag already. Her form has seen her rise from being ranked outside of the top 500 to number 73 in the live ranking. Svitolina is making her sixth appearance in Birmingham. Her best result was a quarterfinal finish in 2018.

Fruhvirtova starts the week up one place in the live ranking at number 57. The Czech number nine has struggled with her form this year and currently has lost more matches than she has won. She too is making her debut on grass for the season and arrives in Birmingham after her first-round exit at the French Open. Fruhvirtova has found it hard to settle on grass in her young career. Since making her debut in 2019, she has managed only one win on grass out of four matches. Monday’s tie will be the first between the two and she will hope to end a four-match losing run. The winner here will play either sixth seed Bernarda Pera or the unseeded Marie Bouzkova next.
