This was her 21st victory of the season and the fourth in six outings on hard court. It propelled her up to 25th in the live ranking which is the highest she has placed in over a year. Svitolina, a one-time US Open semifinalist, missed a huge chunk of last season due to maternity leave. This saw her miss last season’s US Open as well as two other majors. She returned in April and immediately picked up from where she left. The Ukrainian has made at least the quarterfinals in her last two Grand Slams. She also won her first tour title in two years with her success in Strasbourg. Svitolina has one victory against Pegula in four encounters.

Jessica Pegula has won the last three meetings with Svitolina with all being on hard court. She will fancy her chances of a fourth victory due to how she has dominated on hard court. The American has compiled a 45-14 record this year. The majority of her wins, 31, have come in 39 outings on hard court. The latest of which came in straight sets against Patricia Maria Tig in the second round. It took her one hour and 11 minutes to earn the win by the loss of just four games. Pegula has advanced to the third round at Flushing Meadows for the fourth season in a row. She made it all the way through to the quarterfinals last season and will seek at the very least to equal this feat. Despite her run to this round, she has dropped one place to fourth in the live ranking. Pegula has won one title this season and finished as runner-up once with both achievements coming on hard court. The winner will book a fourth-round showdown with either 17th-seed Madison Keys or 14th-seed Liudmila Samsonova.
