In the second quarterfinal match at the Hungarian Grand Prix, it is a battle of youth against experience. 21-year-old Elina Avanesyan faces her experienced opponent Anna Karolina Schmiedlova for a place in the semi-finals. There, they will face the winner of the first quarterfinal of the day, either Suzan Lamens or Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Let's check out some of the key factors to consider for our prediction for this game.

With just four rankings points between the two players, this should be a hugely competitive match, certainly moreso than the only previous meeting between the two which Schmiedlova won comfortably on the clay at Bastad in 2022. In terms of form, Avanesyan comes into this game in good shape having won seven of her last ten matches. That includes an excellent run to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros a couple of months back before the start of the grass season. 

Avanesyan defeated fifth seed Magdalena Frech of Poland 7-6(5), 6-4 in the opening round in Hungary. However, she was pushed hard against Spaniard Rebeka Makarova in the second round, losing the first set 6-2, before coming back strongly to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. 

Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova has been taken the distance in both her games in Hungary so far. Defeating Kamilla Rakhimova 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round before beating Sara Sorribes Tormo 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the second. She'll need to have a better start if she is to get the better of Avanesyan who has won the first set in nine of her last ten games.  However, Schmiedlova does have form on her side, winning the Parma 125 tournament in May.

With both players so closely ranked and rated, expect this one to be very keenly fought for that spot in the semi-final.
