Ninth seeded Marketa Vondrousova continues her bid to win a second successive Grand Slam. The Czech takes on the 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova for a place in the last 16 of the US Open. Unseeded opposition will be faced in the next round, either Katie Boulter or Peyton Stearns. Vondrousova started this tournament in a career high ninth place but is up to seventh in the live rankings. Two tournaments have been played since winning the Wimbledon title and the quarter finals were reached in Cincinnati. In 2018, Vondrousova got to the fourth round of this Grand Slam but this is her first time past the second round since then. So far in New York, the Czech has beaten Han Na-Iae and Martina Trevisan for the loss of only seven games. Vondrousova has won three of her four matches against Alexandrova. The most recent saw her come from a set down to win in Adelaide at the start of this year and that was their first meeting in six years. 

Ekaterina Alexandrova began this tournament ranked 20th and is up a place in the live rankings. This is the first time that Alexandrova has made it past the second round of the US Open. The last four years have seen her beaten in round two. Her best performance in a Grand Slam was getting to the fourth round in this year's Wimbledon Championships. Last week saw the Russian lose in the final of the Tennis of the Land hard court tournament held in Cleveland. One tournament has been won by her this year but that was on grass. This tournament has seen her beat 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in three sets (middle set lost) and then defeat Lesia Tsurenko, losing just four games.
