Second seed Aryna Sabalenka will battle 29th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the third round of this year’s US Open. We have the prediction for their seventh competitive match from which the winner will battle Madison Keys or Elise Mertens.

Alexandrova has qualified for the third round at Flushing Meadows for the second successive year. In the second round, she defeated the wildcard Iva Jovic. She has never progressed past this stage and will be eager to change things this year.

The Russian has had a shaky start to her campaign here, needing to win deciders in both her matches. In each match she lost the opening set. The world number 31’s record stands at 22-20. She has won three times against Sabalenka, one win coming at a tour final.

Sabalenka defeated Alexandrova the last time they met – at last year’s Wimbledon campaign. A straight-set win in the fourth round allowed her to tie this series at 3-3. With her current hot streak, she will be confident of taking the lead after this fixture.

Sabalenka has won her last seven matches, all on hard courts and in straight sets. The Belarussian arrived in New York after claiming the title in Cincinnati. Among those she beat at that WTA 1000 event were Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula.

She has carried that momentum to Flushing Meadows. To advance to this round, the world number two defeated Lucia Bronzetti by the loss of four games. After two back-to-back semi-final exits, Sabalenka finally made it to the final here last season. She will be looking to go further this year.
